UN Convention on Conservation of Biological Diversity
It is one of the key conventions adopted at the World Summit on Environment and Development in Rio in 1992 and is built on the goals of conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use of its components, fair and balanced sharing of the benefits obtained through the use of genetic resources. The Conference of the Parties has developed study programmes for the major biomes on earth, with each programme providing the vision for the biome to which it relates, and the basic principles to guide future work. These programmes are: (i) agricultural biodiversity; (ii) biodiversity of arid and semi-humid areas; (iii) forest biodiversity; (iv) inland waters are prepared for biodiversity.
