The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED)
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Rio Earth Summit, held in 1992, introduced a new integrated approach to the problem of desertification that draws attention to sustainable development. The Rio Summit recommended to the United Nations General Assembly to establish an Intergovernmental Negotiating Commission to draft the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification by June 1994.
