Sahel
In Arabic, edge means shore. Its meaning here is the region dominated by semi-arid vegetation, located between the Sahara desert in the south of North Africa and the tropical savanna region in the south. As a result of overgrazing and the destruction of vegetation, this region has undergone significant desertification in places and the people have remained in poverty. In the region where Chad, Mauritania, Mali, Gambia, Niger, Nigeria, Burkina Faso and Cameroon are located, hunger occurs in dry years and thousands of people can die of hunger in years of severe drought.
