A planimeter is a mechanical instrument used to measure the area of an arbitrary two-dimensional shape or region, typically found in maps, blueprints, or any flat surface. It is especially useful for measuring the area of irregular or complex shapes, where traditional methods like formulas for regular shapes (e.g., rectangles, circles) do not apply.

How a Planimeter Works:

1. Tracing the Shape: The user places the planimeter's tracing arm along the perimeter of the shape to be measured.
2. Movement: The instrument consists of a measuring arm that follows the outline of the shape while maintaining a fixed position of the origin point.
3. Area Measurement: As the arm traces the shape, the planimeter calculates the enclosed area based on the distance traveled and the movement of a pointer or counter on a scale. The result is often displayed in square units (e.g., square inches, square centimeters).
4. Types of Planimeters:
   • Polar Planimeter: This type has a single arm that traces the perimeter, and its movements are tracked by a scale or dial. The tracing arm has a fixed point, and the movement of the arm allows for area measurement based on its distance.
   • Wheel Planimeter: This type has a wheel that rolls along the perimeter of the shape, with the wheel’s movement translating into area measurement.

Applications of Planimeter:

• Surveying and Cartography: To measure the areas of land, plots, or regions on maps or blueprints.
• Engineering and Architecture: In planning and design, where areas of irregular shapes need to be calculated.
• Geography and Environmental Studies: To calculate land areas, watershed measurements, or even the area of lakes, forests, or other natural features.

In the modern era, many planimeter functions are now performed using digital software, but the mechanical version is still used in some fields for precise, hands-on area measurement.
